Preservative Free - Food Additive - Processed Foods  

Paleo Recipe Diet is Preservative Free, food additive free and processed food free. Honestly, I think it is near to impossible to eat 100% preservative free. Foods with preservatives, pesticides, herbicides are in every food we purchase at commercial markets. I do think it is realistic to be more health conscience in what we eat. Eliminate as many preserved. chemically treated and processed foods as possible.

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)

This is a new one for me. I started to notice No GMO on food products. What this means is that the food has not been genetically modified through genetic engineering technology. Plants or animal cells can be inserted or deleted of genes. The choice is your but the preference should be purchasing foods NO GMO

Food Preservative
:
Food free of synthetic inputs preservative,  pesticides, chemical fertilizers, free of GMO, non- processed, no chemicals were farming method from the Neolithic Period until early 20th century. The majority of American agriculture was organic until the mid- 20th century. Pesticides, additives and preservatives were introduced to agriculture to preserve and increase production. This is a standard practice in commercial agriculture presently. Food preservative food additives maybe antimicrobial preservatives.  Antimicrobial preservative inhibits growth of bacteria, fungi, mold, and antioxidants.

Common Food Preservatives:

-          Sorbic Acid and its salts: Used as food preservative organic compound.

-          Benzoic Acid and its salts:  Inhibits growth of mold, yeast and some types of bacteria.

-          Calcium Propionate: Used as preservative in breads, processed meats and dairy products. Used as food supplement to prevent milk fever in cows. Can be used as fungicide on fruits. Calcium Propionate is slightly toxic.

-          Sodium Nitrite: Inorganic compound used as food additive to prevent growth of bacterium.  Alters color of preserved fish and meats. Used in human and veterinary medicine. Health effect may cause DNA and cellular damage. Wikipedia.org   

-          Sulfur Dioxide: Chemical compound produced by volcanoes and commercially. Used as preservative for dried fruits to maintain color and prevent rotting. Additive used in wine making. Can have negative health effects to humans and animals. Sulfur Dioxide is an air pollutant.    

-          Sodium Bisulfite: Chemical compound used to prevent oxidation and to kill microbes. . Added in salad bars to preserve plants apparent freshness. Can cause allergic reactions. In the 1980s, sodium bisulfate was banned from use on raw fruits and vegetables in the United States following the deaths of 13 people who unknowingly consumed produce treated with excessive amounts of the substance.    

-          Potassium Bisulfate: Chemical compound used in alcoholic beverages as a sterilizing agent.   

-          EDTA: Added to some foods as stabilizer or preservative to prevent discoloration. An organic pollutant.       

-          BHA: Mixture of tow organic compounds. Added to fats and fat containing foods for preservation. Health finding of National Institutes of Health  

-          BHT: Fat soluble organic compound used an antioxidant for additive also used in embalming fluid. Controversial negative health effects: hyperactivity in children and cancer risks.

-          Propyl Gallate: Added to oils and fats to prevent oxidation. Can act as estrogen antagonist.

Paleo Natural Preservative: Refrigeration, Freezing, Salt (orthodox Paleo Diet exclude salt), Rosemary, Vinegar, Pickling, Smoking and Citric Fruits.

                      Pesticides

Pesticides: Substances used to prevent, destroy, used for repelling any pest. Beneficial for farming increases production. Negative effects toxicity to humans, animals, fish, plants, land and waterways.

- Herbicides: Known as weed killers. Kills weeds while leaving desired crop relatively unharmed. Also   used to clear waste land. Will kill all plant life it comes in contact with.

Insecticides:  Used in agriculture to kill insects including eggs and larvae. Has negative effect on ecosystem and toxic to humans.

- Fungicides: Used to kill fungi in plants and fight fungal infection in animals. In agriculture fungi can damage plants resulting in loss of profits to farmers. Chemical like all pesticides has a negative effect to humans, plant life and the environment. Some natural fungicide Paleo Foods are: Tea tree oil, Cinnamaldehyde, cinnamon essential oil, Jojoba oil, Rosemary oil and Neem oil.

- Rodenticides: Chemical feed baits used to kill rodents. Product is also lethal to other species, especially dogs and cats.

- Biocide: Chemical microorganism used in agriculture. Used a to protect crops from biological infestation and growth. Also used in swimming pool as disinfectant.
